Pancha Karma

Pancha Karma is  the most effective healing modality in Ayurveda. Many of us are familiar with cleanses in the West, but an Ayurvedic cleanse is based on different principles than our usual ideas of cleansing and fasting with juices and highly marketed super foods. Even if you have a wonderful diet, a seasonal cleanse helps to keep you strong and balanced.

Pancha Karma is used seasonally or when you feel out of balance, from travel, work, poor diet, or other accumulated stresses.

An individualized cleanse can be very supportive, even if you have to carry on with daily tasks. The cleanse is most effective with a few days that are less hectic, where you can really deepen the practice.

When I lead Ayurvedic cleanses, you can choose your level of commitment, from a mono-diet, with supportive herbs and cleansing routines, to full Pancha Karma, the five actions or treatments that include Shirodhara, Abhyanga, Svedana, Nasya, and specific oil Bastis for your constitution and needs.

Pancha Karma reverses the degenerative process quickly and it’s effects are lasting and profound. Ayurvedic cleansing uses a combination of massage, balancing herbal oils, mono diet, special foods, mild fasting and colon therapies to rid the body of accumulated toxins. This works by stimulating the liver and digestive organs.

The length of Pancha Karma cleanse depends on your needs, practice and availability. It is a three fold process which includes the preparation of the body, Purva Karma, the actual five cleansing therapies, Pancha Karma, and the reintroduction of food, Samsarjana Karma.

I guide you daily through this cleanse, making adjustments as necessary, so that you receive the full benefits of this experience.

Shirodhara

Shirodhara : Golden Thread of Peace

Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment that feels so good, it is also called “bliss therapy!”

Shirodhara is a shamana treatment, often prescribed during the rasayana rejuvenation period after pancha karma (the traditional Ayurvedic five actions of detoxification), or any time calming and re-integrating the nervous system is a top priority.

In Sanskrit, shiro means “head;” dhara means “thread” or “flow.’’ To undergo shirodhara is to receive an ever-flowing stream of warm, herbal oils onto one’s forehead, in alternating patterns which is very similar to deep meditation.

The sublime experience of Shirodhara may lie beyond the grasp of language!  The treatment brings a complete feeling of relaxation and an effortless return to a sense of Self. One observes signs of deep relaxation, such as deepened breathing, released muscle tension, and improved circulation.

Ayurvedic texts state that Shirodhara activates the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, opens the 6th and 7th chakras, heightens the senses and increases faith, intuition and overall spiritual awareness. Traditionally, Shirodhara has been applied to treat insomnia, memory loss, headaches, mental tension (anxiety, worry, stress), ADD, TMJ, exhaustion, emotional imbalance, various disorders of the head, neck, eyes, ears, nose and nervous system, and certain skin diseases.

Deeply stress-relieving, Shirodhara nourishes and calms the nervous system, cleanses the mind and senses of impressions, improves mental clarity and cognition.

In clinical studies, Shirodhara has shown marked potential to alleviate insomnia, reduce anxiety, and diminish high blood pressure.

Abhyanga Massage

Abhyanga is a friction-based, choreographed massage utilizing warm dosha-specific herbalized oils. These hand made oils are massaged into the skin through gentle to medium strokes, and penetrates deep into the tissues to loosen toxins, improve circulation, and creates wonderful relaxation. This treatment is followed by dry brushing (garshana), and herbalized detoxifying body wrap..

The Sanskrit word Sneha can be translated as both “oil” and “love.” and leaves a deep feeling of stability  and warmth. This practice restores the balance of the doshas and enhances well-being and longevity. Regular Abyanga is especially grounding and relaxing for Vata dosha imbalances, but everyone can benefit from this practice.

“The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much even if subjected to accidental injuries, or strenuous work. By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, trimmed body parts and becomes strong, charming and least affected by old age”

Charaka Samhita Vol. 1, V: 88-89

(One of the Great ancient texts of Ayurveda)
